Determine What Type of Key to Buy
How To Get A New Car Key Made Without The Original There are different types of keys for different cars. Older cars have simple keys like you have for your house door lock, with teeth that fit into the door or ignition and allow the owner to open the door, lock it, and start the ignition. Newer cars have keys that are inserted in the same way as older keys, but that also contain programmable chips and buttons for an added layer of security. Without proper programming, the key does not work, even if someone cuts the key to match the key needed for the ignition. The only way these keys work is if someone programs the chip properly.
Some keys do not look like traditional keys at all. These keys are smart keys. They look like a small remote control or key fob, and allow for keyless entry, starting the car, opening the trunk and initiating a panic alarm that causes your car horn to blare. An ignition key often is encased in the smart key fob in the event your battery goes dead.
Once the replacement key blank or smart key fob is in hand, the car owner should decide how to have the key cut and programmed. If the key is for an older car that does not have an encoded chip, the owner should look in the manual that came with the car and search for the copy key code.
Cut the Key
The replacement key and key code should then be taken to a locksmith so the locksmith can cut the new key. This may be the cheapest method of key replacement. If the key code is not in the owner’s manual, it may be found by removing the interior door panel and searching for a key code stamped on the locking mechanism of the door. If it is impossible to find the key code, the replacement key and the VIN number of the car should be taken to a local auto dealer so the dealership can cut and program the key. The latter is likely to cost more.
Program the Key
The locksmith, hardware store, or dealer not only has to cut the toothed portion of the key, but also has to program the key’s encoded chip in order for the key to work properly and grant you entry into your car. If the key is a smart key, it simply needs to be programmed with the proper codes. Car owners may even be able to program the key themselves if they have a car key programmer and know how to do the programming.
